Pier Park Crossings breaks ground

July 2, 2018

The St. Joe Company and HomeCorp broke ground last week on a 240-unit apartment complex located off North Pier Park Drive adjacent to Frank Brown Park. The one, two, and three-bedroom units will be open in early 2019. The development of Pier Park Crossings brings an affordable housing option to the west end of the sandy beach and is convenient for those working in Pier Park. St. Joe President and CEO Jorge Gonzalez said the complex is in a great location "one-half block to 1.5 million square feet of retail and entertainment." Apartments, which will have metal roofs, screened porches, 9-foot ceilings, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and vinyl plank flooring, will rent from approximately $900 to $1,900. There will also be a clubhouse with a salt-water pool. This is the second apartment complex currently under construction in the city. Parkside Apartments at 17225 Panama City Beach Parkway, will have 288 units when completed. It is located just west of the Municipal Complex.   read more

PCB breaks ground on New City Hall

June 29, 2018

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Panama City Beach officials gathered to break ground on its new $3 million City Hall building right before its regular council meeting Thursday. “This City Hall has been talked about for 20 years, and it’s a much needed part of Panama City Beach,” said Mayor Mike Thomas. The building will be funded with reserve funds, and construction for it is scheduled for next month. Officials said the New City Hall could be completed by next year. The New City Hall will be a one-story, 14,000-square-foot building with 12,601 square feet of office space, and 1,472 square feet of storage. The existing building stands at 8,038 square feet. The new building will be located west of the Public Services building on the south side of the municipal complex on South Arnold Road. Officials said a new facility was needed because the current building is running out of space. GAC Contractors, Inc was chosen as the cities contractor for this project.   read more

GAC helps American Airlines become part of our Community

June 8, 2018

Some of the passengers on Thursday’s Flight 2855 into Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport had no clue what was going on when their jet was sprayed with a water cannon coming in. Then, they got another surprise when they stepped into the terminal and people were clapping and cheering while the Ukulele Orchestra of St. Andrews was belting out tunes to greet them. The passengers — also given a commemorative airport souvenir bag filled with items from tourism partners and cookies — might not have known it, but they were on the inaugural American Airlines flight from Charlotte, N.C., to ECP. The full flight was about 15 minutes late, but that didn’t curb the enthusiasm at Thursday’s celebration. Dean Blocksom, who lives in Charlotte and has been coming to Panama City for 20 years, was elated at the new non-stop service. After he got off the inaugural flight, he said he’d been waiting for some time for non-stop service. In years past, he’s had to take flights to Pensacola or Tallahassee first before getting a rental car and driving here. “My wife’s parent moved down here 20 years ago,” he said, pointing out that he has a condo here as well. “We’ve been waiting so long for this,” he said. “This is wonderful for us. When we found out about it, we said, ‘We’re going to be on that first flight. We’re going to take advantage of this.’” American Airlines officially opened for business locally Thursday morning. To commemorate the official ticket counter opening, airport officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and praised the new service before an audience that included numerous public officials. They were treated to cupcakes and bottled water, and were then escorted out to the runway to see the water cannon blast over the jet as it came in. The world’s largest airline is now offering ECP passengers non-stop daily service on the 65-seat CRJ-700 jet to Charlotte Douglas and Dallas-Fort Worth airports, American Airlines hubs that offer connecting flights to destinations around the world. “These two airports represent two of American’s largest hubs, opening East and West Coast destinations for local passengers and guests,” Airport Authority Board member Del Lee said. “It’s just two hours to Dallas and less than an hour now to Charlotte.” He said year after year, the airport continues to grow. “Our relationship with American didn’t happen overnight,” he said. “It was a multi-year relationship that happened over time. And instrumental in this process were the efforts of our economic and tourism partners to grow and attract business to the region.” Lee said the addition of American Airlines to the already strong lineup of legacy airlines at the airport — including Delta, United and Southwest — “means our passengers have options this summer and beyond. More daily flights. More non-stop destinations. And seamless access to global connections.” Eric Morgan, senior vice president of American Airlines, said the with the new service to Charlotte and Dallas-Fort Worth, “your community now has access to what we believe is the world’s best airline network. You have access to over 1,500 connecting flights out of Charlotte and Dallas, destinations of 200-, 300-plus around the world.” He said it is exciting to provide the service to the community and the hope is it will be a long and strong partnership. “The hospitality that we’ve experienced here has just been tremendous,” Morgan said. “And this is one of the nicest looking facilities that we’ve opened service here in quite a while.” GAC Contractors, Inc. worked with ECP to construct the new American Airlines Ticket Counter.   read more

Vote set on Beach school, STEM building contractors !!

April 10, 2018

District staff has recommended hiring Reliant South for the new elementary school, and GAC for the STEM building at Bay High School PANAMA CITY — Bay District Schools staff has recommended local firms oversee the construction of two major upcoming capital projects. The school board at its 1 p.m. meeting Tuesday will vote on whether to go along with those recommendations for a new beach elementary school and Bay High School’s planned science and technology center. After interviewing officials from four firms per project, staff has recommended hiring Reliant South Construction Group as the construction manager for the elementary school, set to be built alongside the planned sports park off U.S. 98 at an estimated cost of $35 million. They also would like to see GAC Contractors hired as contract manager for the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics building at Bay High, which doesn’t have a set price yet. Reliant South, GAC Contractors, Lord & Son Construction Inc. and Allstate Construction Inc. were interested in handling the elementary school project, while Ajax Building Corp., Allstate, GAC and Reliant South were vying for the STEM building contract. Lee Walters, the director of operational support services for the school, said Monday the 125,000-square-foot Beach school is sorely needed. “As growth is continuing to explode out there, it is proven to be really needed,” he said. “We are at capacity in all of our other schools on the Beach. We expect to have it open in 2020 at the start of the school year.” The St. Joe Company donated 47 acres of land to the school district for the project, under the condition that the district share half the cost of building an entry road and begin construction within three years. Of those 47 acres, about 30 are buildable. Reliant South Construction Group is a full-service general contractor based in Panama City that is licensed to do work in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. The company has completed several other local school projects, including renovations at Rutherford High School and Cedar Grove Elementary. GAC Contractors also has handled several school projects. “GAC built the Breakfast Point School,” Walters said. “That is a pretty good-sized project. Recently, they were involved in the Tommy Oliver (Stadium) project. They are already mobilized on the site.” The stadium, demolished and rebuilt during the past two years, is on the grounds of Bay High. Serving as a construction manager, the firms would oversee all aspects of each project, paying subcontractors, cutting checks, looking for ways to cut costs and working with the architect and school staff in designing the project. The district and the company would agree upon a maximum guaranteed price for each project, and the construction manager would get a yet undetermined percentage of that amount. The renewal of the half-cent sales tax to pay for schools is not on Tuesday’s agenda, but it will be coming before the school board soon, Walters said. School officials want to put an extension of the tax on the ballot for voters to decide in August. The school board and Bay County Commission would have to vote in favor of placing the tax on the ballot before June 22, which is the last day of qualifying, Supervisor of Elections Mark Andersen said Monday. The vote will come about two years before the current half-cent tax cycle is set to sunset on Dec. 31 2020, but getting it on the ballot early ensures there will be continuous funding for projects that still might be in progress at the end of the cycle. A 2018 vote also would give the district time to try again should the tax fail. From its approval in 2010 through the end of 2017, the tax has brought in $125,286,216 and has been used to upgrade technology district-wide, fund new Chromebooks for middle school students and fund renovation and construction projects at 20 schools. “It will be brought up soon,” Walters said. “Attorneys are working on the verbiage, and the half-cent oversight committee is going through projects.”   read more
